A day trip to Stamford

House-front-StamfordOn a recent summery weekend day, when I found myself in London passportless (see last post) and with my friends scattered abroad on holidays, I went on a little solo adventure. My destination was Burghley House – one of the great Elizabethan stately homes. But some thirty minutes after getting off the train, I’d fallen for the little town of Stamford.

From its fairytale train station and swan-filled riverside park to its weekend markets and quaint stone houses, it was a delight to explore. Just big enough to keep your interest and small enough not to need a map. Oozing with history. Just when I thought I’d seen everything, I’d turn a corner and discover another church, or another family walking a hunting dog or another house covered in ivy to dote over…

Sometimes pictures just speak louder than words.

Its the ideal town for a stroll. (More to come from Burghley House soon.)
